Third control appointment

Once again, I’m going alone to Riget with Arthur.
We wait in – what feels like a hundred years – before we come in to Arthur’s doctor.

Arthur is – everywhere – he crawls around and tilts things and it is hard to get to talk with the doctor.

I tell the doctor that we have to get Arthur in daycare in January and the concerns related to this. We are very worried about whether the level of noise in the daycare will affect him. We experience that he gets “stressed out” by too much noise and stir, which makes him more anxious and restless.

Arthur also sleeps bad at night. He wakes up many times and coughs a lot. It can possibly be a side effect from the Clonazepam with infants. Arthur is prescripted Aeromir 0.1mg./blow x 6.

Arthur’s doctor suggests that we send Arthur’s tests to Wales with intention on a molecular genetic diagnosis. Jesper and I therefore have to take blood samples and I get times to get that done.

Næste kontrolbesøg bliver først i december.

Second Control Appointment

I go alone to Riget with Arthur.

At the doctor’s I explain, that I have registered, that it is specific noises that trick Arthur. It is of course the sudden sounds, but it is as if, it does not only depend on the volume, but maybe more of a certain frequency?

The doctor tells me, that it isn’t dangerous for Arthur to get startles in his body. They give him tension in his body and causes stiffness, but they’re not really damaging.
We agree that we have to try to avoid sounds that affect Arthur, but it is limited what we can do. Sometimes Arthur also laughs loudly, when he gets startled.

We keep him on Clonazepam – Same doses.
Next control appointment isn’t until December.

Om at flyve - About flying

About flying

There are loads of thing that you do not know, when you have child with a particular diagnosis, which you’re not able to read about anywhere. Therefore we were very unsure, how it would work out to take Arthur flying. Was there anything special we needed to know, any special precautions we needed to take?

I called the hospital and got an additional prescription, so I could pick up extra medicin for Arthur at the pharmacy – I wanted to double check that we had enough medication both in the hand luggage and in the check in luggage. I copied Arthur’s hospital records and packed them with Arthur’s medication – what if the airport security staff would take the medication from us, because it was a bottle with fluids? I don’t know what I imagined exactly – that they would deny an infant vital medication?

Of course we made it – at the airport everything went without any problems – as was the flight itself. There were no particular precautions to be made – Arthur never reacted to flying in any way.
We had a fantastic holiday in Spain and France.

Breathing problems

Arthur has cought a lot over the last time. Nevertheless we went to the summerhouse on Friday. The coughing got so bad, that he threw up again and again during his coughing-attacks. We had to call the on call doctor, who came to the summerhouse and examined him. She made sure, that we were admitted to Holbæk Hospital in isolation, because the doctors suspected it was whooping cough.

Arthur got a lot of tests taken and we had to wait for answers, but when it became weekend, they didn’t test and we just had to wait. No doctors or nurses came, and they forgot to give us food. Both of us had vomit on our clothes, but they didn’t have any other clothes we could get. It was all very absurd and weird, but after two days, we convinced them, that we should be transferred to Riget Hospital. My mother picked us up and drove us to Copenhagen, where we at Rigshospitalet got admitted in isolation again. After 24-hours, we got discharged. In all of the time Arthur was admitted, he didn’t want to eat. Luckily he drank, otherwise he should have had tube.

In about a week, we’re going to Spain and France – so hope he gets well soon.

Fysioterapi - Første besøg - Physiotherapy – First visit

Physiotherapy – First visit

Today, Arthur has been to physiotherapy at Rigshospitalet for the first time.

Arthur’s physiotherapist is called Kirsten – And I think she is in love with Arthur, which brings me to like her very much.

Kirsten establishes fast, that Arthur is noticeably happy. Arthur laughs loudly when she talks and smiles to him or when she shows him toys that make sounds.
Arthur is otherwise very uninterested in the toys, but really wants to talk with Kirsten.

Arthur gets startled many times, but not necessarily by loud sounds, more like unpredictable sounds.

Arthur is in constant movement, he uses his legs a lot, and Kirsten therefore holds his legs several times, so he can use his arms and hands more. He is very stiff in his legs and when Kirsten lifts him up, he tightens his legs, so he stands very upright. All in all, it’s very obvious, that he has a lot of stiffness in his body.

I get some exercises, where I am to get Arthur to relax in his legs, so he can be calmer. We are also going to buy a "Bumbo" chair for him, because that can lock his legs, so he gets his upperbody moving.

Arthur ends the day with rolling for the first time :) - I am looking forward to going there again - in three weeks.

Første kontrolbesøg - First control appointment

First control appointment

Jesper and I go together to Riget Hospital for Arthur’s first control appointment.
Naturally, there’s a doctors-student with Arthur’s doctor ;)
The doctor examines Arthur. He reacts on minor clapping, taps on the tip of the nose among more. It is as if the medicine takes the top off his sensitivity. Arthur is also more relaxed in his body. The
tensity we’ve previously experienced has changed.

The doctor explains, that the way we have been breaking Arthur’s attacks are an acknowledged maneuver, which parents to children with Hyperexplexia are taught. It even has a name, the Vigevano maneuver. The doctor also tells us, that children can stop breathing during attacks, and that the illness therefore is considered life-threatening.

We have written a lot of questions down. They’re all about what kind of life we can expect that Arthur will have…

How normal an upbringing can he have? Will he outgrow the illness? Can he be in a normal daycare? Which side effects has the medicine? Will he learn to walk? Will he look normal? Will he fall? Is he normally bright/intelligent? Will he die earlier? Does he have to take medicine for the rest of his life? Should we avoid stimulation? May he not play wild?

We leave with both answers and questions and with a new appointment in a week.

Hospitalspause - Hospital break

Hospital break

It’s been 16 days since we were at Riget Hospital and got informed that Arthur has Hyperexplexia. He has not had any attacks.

We have an infinite amount of questions.
We have told friends and family, whom of course has followed Arthur’s progression, about Arthur’s diagnosis.
Everyone has asked a thousand things, that we don’t even know.
We have googled a lot and read loads about Hyperexplexia, but in some way, it is as if we don’t know a thing. The more sites I’ve read, the more filled up have I become.
My friend Sara offered to read about Hyperexplexia for me, so that I didn’t have to choke up in how hard it was, and that was the best offer we could get!

Fysioterapeut - Physiotherapist

Physiotherapist
Arthur has been referred to the physiotherapist at Riget Hospital. He is to start May 25th. The physiotherapist is going to estimate Arthur’s motoric development in relation to the stiffness he has/have had in his body.

His body seems more relaxed after he started to get Rivotril, - he holds his head worse than before, but is still incredibly strong.

Diagnose - Diagnosis

Diagnosis

Jesper and I have both showed up for our appointment at Riget. We are shown to Arthurs doctors office. Two doctors in there today and the secretary will be participating as well.
Arthurs doctor has  seen the video xx Arthurs many seizures. He tells us that there are two types of seizure: One where Arthurs body has a small spasm, a twitch, and one where Arthurs body goes stiff him shaking and crying. Arthurs EEG is normal, wich means that he doesn’t have any form of epilepsy.

The doctor examins Arthur, he taps Arthurs nasal bridge and as he does this, Arthur blinks his eyes and a twitch shimmers through his body. The doctor taps Arthur several times and the same thing happens. When Jesper speaks loudly, Arthurs body also twitches just as he has many twitches when the doctor claps his hands close to his ear.
Arthurs doctor tells us that the video has been sent to doctors conferences all over the world, and in Japan a doctor has suggested him to try the tapping and clapping. He tells us, that Startle Disease means that you have an irregular reaction to certain stimuli, which may be caused by missing neurotransmitters in the brain. He hands us a document reading something about the disease written in English.

Arthur will be trying another drug called Clonazepam. The drug is supposed to treat the seizures. 0.6 milligrams a day.

We have no idea what to say, let alone what questions to ask... I feel like I can’t breathe. I can tell that Jesper seems relieved. We make an appointment for the following week.

In the Rotunda leaving Riget, I manage to say that I’m really upset. Jesper looks at me and tells me that he is certainly not upset, because now we finally know what it is and can act accordingly. He cycles home while I continue down to Sankt Hans Torv, where sit in the sun drinking coffee whilst ringing family members telling them that Arthur has Startle Disease

Den værste nat nogensinde - The worst night ever

Anfaldene ruller ind over ham. Armene bliver stive og trækkes op i luften over hans hovede.

Hen over natten fortsætter anfaldene.

The worst night ever

Today is March 1st 2012 – it has taken me a long time to get myself together to write this post, because it is indescribably hard to write, since it strengthens my memory.

I arrive at Riget hospital in the morning. Arthur is phased entirely out of the Frisium and has had several attacks that night.
Arthur and I are showed the room, where Arthur is hospitalized for the video- and EEG observation the next 24-hours.
When the nurse leaves the room, I sit and look around at the cameras. I feel unbelievably surveillance and don’t really know what to do with myself. Arthur is awake in his lift, and therefore I don’t feel I can do anything else than talk – and play with him, since we’re recorded on film. Hours go by, where I sit on the side of the bed with Arthur. Neither nurse nor doctor comes.

When a nurse finally comes, she explains what is going to happen. It appears, that the process isn’t even started. Arthur has to have the EEG-equipment on and then the cameras will be turned on. Every time Arthur gets an attack, I have to pull in a red cord, and am not allowed to break Arthur’s attacks. Another place at the hospital, are the recordings supervised both day and night.

The nurse lays Arthur in a hospital bed and finds a hat for the purpose. She puts the hat on Arthur and puts gel in the holes. Arthur cries loudly while the hat is sticked-on. Afterwards the cords from the hat are put into a machineand the cameras are turned on. After a while Arthur falls asleep. In his sleep he has several attacks. The attacks appears very intense, now he’s off medicine. As he lay there alone in the hospital bed with all the cords, he suddenly becomes very small and unfamiliar. He looks terribly ill. The attacks roll over him. Arthur’s arms starts to shake while they’re lying by his side, then his shaking increases and goes through his entire body. The arms become stiff and pulls up in the air above his head. Arthur’s body becomes stiff and shakes. Arthur’s eyes are half-open and he is fully conscious. I am not allowed to break his attacks, and I just stand and look at Arthur. I pull the red cord, but neither nurses nor doctors appear before the attacks after 5-15 seconds releases him. Arthur becomes limb/loose in his entire body and cries loud and desperately. All the attacks are alike, but has different intervals.

Both my mother and Arthur’s grandmother, Annelise, come and visit us, which lightens my self-tense mood. Annelise has later told how tremendously terribly it was, just to watch Arthur go through the many attacks without being allowed to help him.

When Jesper came to the hospital after work, we agreed that I should go for a walk, and then take the night with Arthur alone, since only one parent could sleep at the hospital room with Arthur. I left Riget and went down to Sankt Hans Square. I bought an ice cream and a cup of coffee and sat completely still on a bench in the evening sun. I had no words, no thoughts. After an hour, I went back.

During the evening Arthur had several more attacks and Jesper and I crawl together on the other hospital bed and fall asleep. During the night the attacks continue. I move our bed up against Arthur’s, since I can’t take him out of his bed due to all the cords. I hold his hand and caress him. On the screen can I see all three of us in the light of the night. I can’t help crying, as I sit there in the dark and look at my little baby, who lies all alone and live-through unexplainable attacks. All the night, Arthur cries a lot, and it is impossible for my to breastfeed him. He screams loudly when I lay towards my arm.

Next morning the nurse removes the EEG hat off Arthur. We discover, that he has wounds were the cords were. His entire scalp is covered by small red wound-spots and it makes sense, why he cried so much,
The nurse informs us that we can go home. They have 20 attacks on the recordings.

After the hospitalization, it’s almost impossible for me to breastfeed Arthur anymore, and from then on, he feeds on breast milk substitute.

Jeg trapper Arthur ud... - I step Arthur out of the medicine…

9. April 2009

I step Arthur out of the medicine…

I feel quite lost… Arthur’s attacks continues, the doctor is gone, and nobody knows everything… I feel that I am poisoning my child with dangerous medicine. When I read on the internet about the medicine, or just in the medication-brochure, does it not take long to see, that it’s not a-for-fun medication-preparation! I get a feeling inside, that now it must stop! The 14th Arthur must be phased out of the medicine, so the EEG can measure what it should, but to take a “cold turkey”, can’t be appropriate for an infant?!

Slowly, I phase him out of the medicine…

Ringer til Riget... - Calling Riget Hospital...

Calling Riget Hospital

I call Riget again, since Arthur continuous to have many attacks, I don’t know whom to ask for…
The secretary does not know anything

Late that night a doctor calls back. I don’t know who he is, but I explain him our situation and tell him about Arthur’s attacks. He is speechless, when I tell him how much Frisium Arthur gets. He tells that it is not even medicine for a ababy and that he really would not recommend increasing the doses, even though Arthu has attacks. He asks me to call, if the attacks change character and tells me, that Arthur must not get medicin 24-hours prior to the 24-hour-examination/the EEG April 14th.

I hurry code his number in my phonebook, so I at least have someone to call.

Opringning fra Riget - Call from "Riget" Hospital

Call from “Riget” Hospital

I’m sitting in a bar, drinking coffee with a friend, when the Doctor’s secretary calls from the Hospital. Arthur is going to the 24-hour-examination in an EEG video room at “Riget” April 14th. I am told that the doctor will call me in a little while, with some information…

Shortly after, a female doctor calls. I ask why she is calling instead of Arthur’s Doctor? She answers, as the most natural thing in the world, that he retired?!!! RETIRED?!?! But why has he not told us that? Why did we get him as our doctor at all? We have a child, with several intense attacks every day, nobody knows what it is… And then the Doctor (without a word) retires?!?!!

Seventh visit at “Riget” Hospital

Jesper und I go to Riget together.

We tell the doctor that Arthur continuously has circa three attacks every night. They still start by him getting small shakes in the hands, his arms pulls in front of his body, the entire body becomes stiff and the stuttering cry increases, while Arthur’s eyes are half open. We continue to bend his body, this still break the attacks.

The doctor examines Arthur again. He appears completely normal in his development. Though, by sudden sounds he gets a startle through his entire body.
The Doctor wants to increase Arthur’s medicin doses again, Arthur now weighs 5,8 kilos. Therefore should he have 3+3 mg Frisium. The doctor suggests that Arthur comes to the hospital’s video(surveillance) room for a 24hour-examination. Naturally we accept this offer. Arthur must not get medicine, before the hospitalization.

We walk home from the meeting very confused..

Anfald under aftrapning - Attacks during the medicine phase-out

Efter påbegyndt aftrapning, vælter anfaldene ind hver anden time.

Attacks during the medicine phase-out

After starting the medicine phase-out, the attacks are tumbling down every second hour. They are increasing, so it is obvious that the medicine, took the top-amount. I call the “Riget” hospital and Arthur’s doses is increased again.

Flere anfald - More attacks

More attacks

I call the Riget hospital to tell them that the attacks haven’t decreased despite the fact that Arthur has had a higher dosis of medicin. The Doctor tells me, that it might just be a type of infant atacks and that I can expect them to be gone in a couple of months.

I get a new appointment for check-up the 12th of March - I feel it’s terribly far away. Again I ask for Arthur’s medical journal.

Fifth visit at Riget Hospital

Again we are going to Arthur’s new doctor. Jesper is at work, so I’ve taken Arthurs grandmother (Jesper’s mother) Anne-lise with me, in hopes that we might understand more of what the Doctor says, together. Anne-lise might also be able to ask the questions I am not asking.

We arrive at the Doctor’s, and sit in his office. I tell him that the attacks are progressive, but continually brief. I tell him that they primarily happen, when Arthur is asleep, but that we don’t know what tricks them... It is all quiet when Arthur sleeps in his own bed.

The Doctor tells us that the duvets mild touch might be enough to start an attack in Arthur.

He speaks of sleep-myoclonics and infantile stereotypy. I find that we ask about it, but when we leave, I still don’t understand what he has said.

The Doctor repeatedly tells us that there are a lot of infants with attack phenomenons, which disappear by themselves in a couple of months.

Hereafter he increases Arthur’s medicin dosis to 3 mg x 2 daily.

I must call again in a week and tell how it goes.

Attacks despite medication
Jesper and I have since our last visit at Riget Hospital notated every attack on the clock, Arthur has had 3-6 attacks a day, primarily during sleep. The attacks continue to only last a few seconds, and we “break” them as soon as we can hear Arthur’s stuttering cry.

Fjerde besøg på Riget - Fourth visit at the hospital

Fourth visit at the hospital

We are going to a check-up at Riget* with Arthur’s new doctor. Jesper is at work, so I am going there by myself. I am nervous, because Arthur still has startle attacks after he startes on the medication. They are still very brief (a few seconds) and I can still “break” them by positioning Arthur’s body in upright sitting position.

We arrive at the “Rare Handicaps” unit - A unit I certainly don’t want to spend time at - or for that matter want my child to be connected to. Alot of children are playing in the waiting area - Many of them look very special, some are in wheelchairs, some speak peculiarly. We wait for a long time - Arthur sleeps in the carrycot - I play foosball with a not-so-normal boy (to his excitement)...

After waiting an hour the doctor comes out limpingly (that’s how he walks...) to bring us in. In his office he examines Arthur. He tells me that Arthur acts perfectly normal. He is weighed to 4.7 kilos. He examines Arthur’s hands, which are now outspread. The Doctor says that Arthur has a normal tonus and normal tendon reflexes and normal reactions. He tells me that Arthur has an indication of startle reaction when touched or sound influenced. He believes that Arthur might have had what he calls “shivering attacks”. Arthur is going to continue with the same dosis of medicin until the 24th of February, where we will have our next check-up.

I find it unbelievably hard to understand what the doctor is saying, both because I don’t know the terms he is using, but also because I simply can’t hear what he is saying. I ask if I can have a copy of Arthur’s medical journal, in hopes of being able to understand some of it...

Tredje besøg på Riget - Third visit to the hospital

Third visit to the hospital

Both Jesper and I go to the hospital. We are, again, greeted kindly by the reception area for children. They direct us to a room where we have to wait for the doctor. Shortly after, a nurse enters the room. She tells us that the doctor is a spastic and asks if we are ok with that? What a strange warning, since his physical appearance should not matter. Nonetheless, the nurse assures us that he is really good.

Shortly after, the doctor enters. I tell him that Arthur has had 9 seizures since he started on his medication (3 days ago). Jesper tells him, that he has noticed that Arthur’s seizures can be set off by sudden sounds.

The doctor calls the seizures for “startled reactions” but we don’t really understand what he means by that. He notices that Arthur’s hands are very tightly clutched and examines them carefully.

They draw blood to test and we get a weird wee bag home with us, so we can deliver a urin sample the next day (which is really not easy with diapers and an infant)…

After our conversation the doctor orders Frisium mixture – Arthur’s dose is 2 mg twice daily.

We pick up the mixture later in the day, the medication is to be dispensed into Arthur’s mouth with a disposable syringe – it looks and tastes like blackcurrant juice – Arthur thinks it’s a hit!

Andet besøg på Riget - Second visit to the hospital

Arthur får medicin for første gang.

-----------

Second visit to the hospital

I get a call early in the morning and are told, that I should go into the hospital right away, as they have a free timeslot for video- and EEG monitoring. Arthur has had 15 seizures since yesterday.

I arrive, again, to the reception area for children, where I am being met by nice staff. I am directed to another department, and as I understand, it is a department where there are epilepsy specialist.
In the department the chief resident receives me. He is caring and explains in detail what is about to happen. He says that he can understand if I’m a scared, since my son is still very small. He walks me into a room where a woman (don’t know exactly what she is meant to be doing) is waiting.

The woman washed Arthur’s head while I hold him. She finds a sort of bathing cap with small plastic dots in. In the middle of every dot there is a small hole which looks a bit like a pearl. The cap is far too big for Arthur and the woman tells me that he is the youngest patient she has ever had. She gets a new cap in the cupboard, but this one is also too big. With the help of sticky tape used for bandages she is able to make the cap stick to Arthur’s head. In every white plastic dot she adds a gel from a syringe. Then she adds a wire to every one of the little dots. I put Arthur down very carefully into the cot and he falls asleep immediately. The woman corrects the position of a video camera so we can watch Arthur on the screens.

Only a few minutes later, Arthur has another seizure, which is set off as the woman touches Arthur. Shortly after that, Arthur has another seizure. Both seizures lasts a few seconds and stops as I pick up Arthur to comfort him.

It is no longer necessary to record any more, but Arthur has to keep the cap on until the next examination which takes place in another room. In the hallway I meet the chief resident. He has seen the recordings and explains very briefly that there weren’t any changes to Arthur’s brain activity during the seizure, which is usually the case of patients with epilepsy. He says that he has seen thousands of different types of epilepsy. “I don’t know what is the matter with your son but I can guarentee you that he does not have epilepsy”. He is first one to notice that the seizures are set off by stimuli in the shape of sound or touch.

Feeling somewhat more calm, I sit down with Arthur in the new room, where two women are waiting for us. Arthur is wide awake and curiously watches everything as wires are attached to the cap again and connected to an EEG monitor. They turn off the light and start a stroboscope light, but Arthur doesn’t react at all. His EEG is completely normal.

We get sent back to the reception area for children to wait for the doctor from yesterday. When the doctor arrives he suggests that Arthur gets some medication. He weighs Arthur in at 4 kg and tells me, that he will be given Clobazam (frisium) 2.5 mg daily. I do not feel like giving my baby any sort of medication at all, but understands that it is necessary.

Arthur has a scheduled control again on February 9th.

Arthur receives his first bit of medication.

Første besøg på Riget - First visit at Riget (Hospital)

February 6th
First Visit at Riget* Hospital
I walk the carrycot into the Child Reception area at Riget. A nurse receives me. I explain what brought me there. She looks serious. “A three-week-old baby is not supposed to have these kinds of cramps” she says. I feel relieved and understood. I show her the video clips I have recorded and she asks me to wait for the doctor in the waiting area.
I wait for a long time and drink coffee, juice, coffee, juice. Late in the day, a doctor arrives. The doctor makes a note of my description of Arthur’s seizures and performs a child examination. Arthur has a 5-seconds seizure, which the doctor fortunately observes.
I am informed that Arthur will be admitted for video- and EEG- supervision, but for now I can take him home till they have an opening. I am given the telephone number for the Child Reception and leave relieved.

Andet lægebesøg - The second doctor visit

February 5th
The Second Doctor Visit
I arrive on time. Sit ready in the waiting area when the doctor calls our names. Again, her attitude is unpleasant. I quickly sit down and hand her the camera. She watches the video clips through once. Then she picks up the phone and calls Rigshospitalet.*
When she has put down the receiver, she tells me to go to the Rigshospital and that they expect Arthur in the Child Reception.
In the street outside the hospital I call Jesper. I have no emotions; just tell him that I will bring Arthur to Riget. Jesper becomes frightened and asks if he should take off work and come home. “No no, it’s fine, I’ll handle it, I call you later..”

Videooptagelse - Video Recordings

February 4th
Video Recordings
I find my camera and prepare it to recording. The seizures only occur when Arthur sleeps. I feed him and he falls asleep as expected. I lay him gently in the cradle and wait.
Arthur has not slept for long when the first seizure occurs. It is a short seizure and I do not manage to film it. Arthur has several seizures but they only last a few seconds. I cannot figure out what the tricks them, but it has to be something that happens in his sleep.
Not until late at night, I succeed in recording three seizures. The recordings are frightening and I become terribly sad by watching them.
All night I have the camera prepared to film the seizures. I wake up every time by the sound of Arthur’s stuttering cry, but only manage to record the last of the seizures before they relief his body.

Første lægebesøg - The first doctor visit

February 3rd
The First Doctor Visit

I am late for Arthur’s doctor’s appointment. Breast feeding and warm coats are a mess. I am still so new at mothering, that time is alienated from my calendar. I rush into the waiting area and apologise to the doctor’s secretary without luck.
The doctor enters the waiting area and snaps at me that I ought to be on time. She is in fast movement and seems busy. I manoeuvre the carrycot with Arthur into the consultation room and place myself opposite, facing the doctor. She looks at me stiffly, almost as if I interrupt her by coming. I get the feeling that she finds me idiotic and thinks I should have stayed at home with Arthur... Nonetheless I manage to explain to her, that I think Arthur shakes in a strange way. She gives me a peculiar look, looks into her computer screen and then back at me, “Shakes?” she asks...
I explain that the Healt Visitor told me to take Arthur to the doctor, as a sort of excuse for my presence in her consultation room.

“Many children have insignificant seizures, it will pass in time” - she tells me briefly. “After all, he has not been shaking during our consultation!”, she continues. I become insisting and she becomes further annoyed and mentions that it was I who came late and that she had to move on. “You can come back when you have recorded a video of what you think is wrong”, she finishes. I lift the carrycot with Arthur and hurry myself out in the waiting area, run down the stairs, place the carrycot in the pram and rush myself out in the January cold.

Sundhedsplejerskens andet besøg - The Health Visitors’ Second Visit

February 2nd
The Health Visitors’ Second Visit

Arthur is three weeks old. He has had 14 seizures in the last 24 hours. His shakings are increasingly severe. It is almost like he is convulsing. It is in his entire body. I am frightened to death of what is happening to him.

The Health Visitor arrives on time. I have made tea, again, but Hanne Dorthe does not seem to want any tea. I quickly explain that the shakings have become worse and more frequent. She can see that I am scared and consults me to contact my doctor.

I order a doctor’s appointment the second she leaves.
